My first attempt at becoming a creative entrepreneur and what I learned from it

Earlier this year I’ve decided that I want to start my own business, doing illustration. The first step I took was starting a subscription box of physical products that I designed and produced myself and that I would mail to my subscribers, on a monthly basis. Now, almost six months later, I am closing down […]

Why do we obsess about technique when starting a creative career?

We are too easily seduced by technique and tools, instead of testing, playing with ideas and concepts. When starting out in an industry that’s new to us, we sometimes believe that finding that one technique, or that one perfect tool, will single handedly shed light on us and make us successful.

Evolving as an artist and overcoming art block

“Stop being so hard on yourself. Stop comparing your own art to professionals, stop beating yourself up when it doesn’t look perfect”.

Charging clients: Hourly rate or project based?

As hourly billing is the most common method, you can get a feel for the industry standard and estimate your worth by experience. You can then increase your rate as you develop in experience, confidence and expertise. The problem arises when you outgrow the hourly rate you have placed upon yourself, and when you fail to realize that you are offering more value to your clients than you are charging.

Everything you wanted to know about Desinion

Desinion is a new tool that designers can use to A/B test their work and get quick and detailed feedback on their designs. It’s just been launched about 3 months ago and I think it’s pretty cool, so I did a review of it and an interview with its creator, below.

My December wallpaper has been featured in Smashing Magazine!

I’m happy to say it’s the first time I’ve had a wallpaper published by Smashing Magazine in their special “Desktop wallpaper calendar” section 🙂 It’s an awesome feeling, because I’ve been following their section for years now and I’m a big fan of what’s going on there. What happens is basically designers send their desktop […]

Viral illustrated Facebook-covers for presidential campaign

For the non-Romanian readers of this blog, it’s the day before the elections for president here. So I’ve taken the time to tell you about a very cool project, that happens to be part of the presidential campaign of one of the candidates. No, I haven’t started doing politics – nor will I, but since […]

Why Daily Doodle is one of the best things I’ve started this year

I started doing Daily Doodles earlier this year, about seven months ago (thank God that my Instagram account keeps track). At the time I posted my first one, I don’t really remember researching the idea and seeing how so many other people implemented it. I just wanted to draw. And I knew this would help […]

Creative Est 2014: Turning creative ideas into sustainable businesses

Although I’m always interested in discovering new ideas and endeavours when it comes to contemporary art, I hadn’t yet been to a festival dedicated to the creative industries, whatever those might be. That is, until yesterday. Because this weekend, the Botanical Garden of Bucharest hosted Creative Est, a festival that celebrates design, contemporary art, music, […]

If you haven’t seen them yet, you should take a look. And if you have, here’s a […]
